Hidden amongst the hustle of Brisbane’s Fortitude Valley, don’t be deterred by The Vietnamese’s simple front – this restaurant has authenticity and flavour to boot!
Packed with customers on the inside, this hidden treasure has had spirit from its start. Owned by the Le family who moved from Vietnam in 1975, The Vietnamese has remained under the management of Bich Le, serving up great value Asian food since 1983. Most ingredients in the meals are sourced locally, including from the Le family’s own farm. Bich Le still works in the kitchen, preparing food for the day’s dishes.
Known for their famous Beef Pho soup, it was the first dish on my tongue. Served within minutes of ordering, in a traditionally Vietnamese cobalt decorated bowl, this soup was not only authentic in appearance but also in flavour. A taste that develops through the bite, this dish was delicious! The thinly sliced rare beef and flat rice noodles were infused with a rich salty broth. The divine tenderness of the beef was the highlight of the dish, where it is commonly a downfall for other Pho chefs.
Following the Beef Pho there was a disappointing lag in waiting for the second dish, the Flat Noodle with Chicken. Despite the wait, once more, the food was delicious. Massive in portion size, the Flat Noodles will easily serve two people for dinner. Full of classic stir-fry vegetables, broccoli, carrot, cauliflower and capsicum, combined with the flat rice noodles and chicken, this dish is a serious crowd pleaser.
‘Dish Of The Dine’ would have to go to the Beef Pho soup, you can’t go past an expertly cooked classic. Take your friends and family along for an easy, delicious, and cheap fun filled night! Oh and it’s BYO…
At The Vietnamese let the dishes and the staff do the talking, although lacklustre in appearance the food and the staff are fantastic; you can feel the spirit and happiness in other customers!
Pro tip: Book your table! It is very busy, even on weeknights.
